Zan could talk, but he was choosing not to. He made you feel like you were the only person in the world, and he was sharing these things with you alone.
I would recommend this book for any adolescent boy. He can cope with that.
This, however, is not just any ordinary animal experiment. Ben can see the contradictions and the cruelty as Zan is treated as a human one moment and an animal the next. He was saying no. The problem is while Zan is being raised like a human, he is still a chimp, and after they lose an opportunity for a major grant the whole project is in jeopardy.
But Dad was a really good talker. So, Ben has not only left school and friends behind, he's being asked to accept a new baby "brother", and a new house that's going to be more of a laboratory than a home.
Scientifically, though, things don't go so well. The various relationships that Ben creates, kept me wanting to know what was happening between them, from his crush on his classmate Jennifer Godwin to his unstable and often frustrating relationship with his father.
Zan is cuddly and bright, but also liable to give a vicious bite or even rip a kitchen cabinet off a wall just for the fun of it.
He made you feel like you were the only person in the world, and he was sharing these things with you alone. The purpose of the book is to get you to think and to spark discussion. A chimp that could really talk? Matt Cruise was very likable and did not disappoint at all.
Because despite the inevitable warm fuzziness brought on by something as cute as a baby chimp, Half Brother turns out not to be your usual animal book. Ben could be anyone, which occasionally is the same as saying he's not really anybody in particular.
